Note: each *individual* participant must be age 16 and over.
Meet time is at 8:30am, Saturday, April 11th at the Dante Fascell Visitor Center at Biscayne National Park. The address is: 9700 SW 328th Street, Homestead, FL 33030.
Please arrive promptly to ensure all paperwork is read and signed.
This volunteer experience is best suited for volunteers with a moderate level of physical fitness and experience paddling. Work includes paddling a canoe properly, walking on uneven terrain, bending down and lifting debris/trash, getting in and out of canoes, working in buggy conditions, heat, and sun for 3 hours and can be strenuous.
What we will be doing:
After the morning's orientation/paperwork and safety briefing, we will board our designated canoes and paddle out to Mowry Canal. We will beach our canoes and start our clean up alongside the canal. You must be comfortable with picking up debris and walking on uneven terrain. Once done, we will set all of our trash bags and bins in one area, and weigh them, then we paddle back to the Visitor Center with minimal trash in our canoes. Once we return, we will assist with rinsing and putting away our supplies. Program is highly dependent on weather conditions.
We will provide:
Life jackets, canoes, paddles, trash bags and collection buckets, bug spray, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, first-aid kit, and gloves for hand protection (however, these are a one-size-fits-all deal, so if you have your own that you prefer, like garden or work gloves, please feel free to bring those).
Please bring:
Close-toed shoes that can get wet are mandatory (this is a safety requirement), breathable long-sleeved clothing that can get wet/dirty, hat, sunglasses, reusable water bottle, and enough food/snacks to last you the day.
Due to number of available canoes, this experience is capped at 12 volunteers. If you are no longer able to attend, please call and cancel your reservation so others may sign up!
